Rating: B
"The Rip reveals itself to be an intriguing surprise that swaps easy pyrotechnics for psychological tension, leaning on the undeniable charisma of the Matt Damon and Ben Affleck duo and a steady direction by Joe Carnahan that values spatial containment. Despite a lack of deeper secondary character development, the film stands out for the honesty with which it treats its themes and its refusal to betray the logic of its protagonists in favor of mindless spectacle. It’s a raw portrait of the fragility of human bonds when faced with absolute temptation that doesn’t deserve to go unnoticed."
"The RIP" harks back to earlier 80's and 90's style cop crime thrillers but ultimately, feels more like a fascimile, than an original work, in its own right.
To be fair, perhaps the biggest problem with this genre, in general, is its become its own cliche. Hard drinking, sweary, hairy, violent cop tough guy, sterotypes, who drive souped up cars and are smarter than first appearances, would suggest.
The RIP leans heavily into this cliche, with predictable outcomes. About half way through, I'd worked out who was doing what and why. Its not because I'm especially clever, its because I've seen this all before in one form or another. Yet, the film still includes a reveal that explain's everything, that's supposed, I'm assuming, to come as a revelation to the audience.
Performances from well known faces are alright but hardly add a lot in the way of gravitas, to what is, only a moderately entertaining action, "who dunnit", thriller.
In summary, Hollywood needs new material. You can't expect endless repitition to equal boundless success. In short, an okay watch but does nothing to distinguish itself.
The Rip: A Knives Out Mystery
Convoluted bullshit mystery. How many plates can you spin Mr. Damon? You are incredible and Ben...just does exactly what you know he'll do. Which is the right thing because you are all so just.
Well done officers. Could have been shorter.
If Scott Adkins doesn't kick the snot out of Matt Damon and Ben Affleck in this movie, I'm rating it a big fat "0".
TBC whenever I get around to watching it.
I'd seen the trailer and posters for this film in many places, but for some reason it didn't impress me at all. I found it boring to watch. The acting was good, but the script was slow and dialogue-heavy, which was one of the main reasons it was boring. However, the effects were good. Is it worth watching? I think those who like crime and spy films will enjoy it. Also, some of the actors are familiar faces. I think you should give it a chance. I didn't like it and couldn't even finish it. Still, thank you for your efforts.
Really solid action-thriller from Joe Carnahan and showcases the great bro chemistry between Affleck and Damon. This is, albeit I've only watched a handful so far, best Netflix movie and doesn't have that obvious AI written dialogue thankfully. I did see one twist coming only because this actor also played a traitor in another Netflix movie I watched, but still a fun and entertaining flick. **3.75/5**
9/10 Stars review ratings from me 😻🎃
Really a twist cant really predict it well at least on the first half of it.
Its gritty cop drama style, strong performances, and tense atmosphere, though critics note it slips into predictable genre tropes in the second half.
82/100
After a drug task force gets a tip on a money stash, that turns out to be over $20 million, they find themselves under siege. Being as Matt Damon and Ben Affleck are good friends, it was fun to see them together and they dominated the screen in every scene they were in with the help of a tremendous supporting cast. The story keeps you guessing as to what is really going on, even to the point where the cops seem inept and confused, and the final reveal is gold and changes everything. It was tense, gritty and occasionally explosive and we absolutely loved it. - DrNostromo.com
