Just stumbled upon this movie flipping around new releases. A slow burn supernatural thriller that leans into atmosphere over cheap shocks. It's based on a Venezuelan legend like the BoogeyMan. Different than your typical genre entry. I totally forgot about Diane Guerrero from Orange Is The New Black but she's great in this. The Whistler is definitely worth a watch.

Long, lingering shots, long, drawling dialogue, bland, uncatching tension. This is a pretty movie, for sure. The visuals are gorgeous, but there is no substance, as the tension is simply missing, the characters (while not utterly unforgettable) replaceable, and the narrative halting. The casting is cheap, while not being bottom of the barrel by any stretch, and the directing pretty much on par with that. It is not worth your time, even if it is pretty.

Just saw this one. It was pretty cool. Weird Venezuelan folklore story I didn't know about. Diane Guerrero from Orange Is The New Black is great in this.

The Whistler (2026) blends supernatural horror, family drama, and folklore into an engaging story driven by grief, guilt, and desperate choices. Its unique mythology, emotional conflicts, and atmospheric visuals create an intriguing experience, although inconsistent world-building weakens the tension toward the finale. Overall, it's a worthwhile horror film for viewers who enjoy folklore-inspired thrillers despite its narrative flaws. > by alunauwie
